12. The Curious Tale of Mr Spearfish

Down-on-their-luck Alice and Lenny Spearfish get rich after digging up treasure in their garden. Whilst this provides them with a lovely new house, Lenny goes off the rails as Alice gets more and more despondent.

After being drugged following a big-spending night in the casino, Lenny manages to survive being shot twice by a prostitute-murdering maniac… but how?

As he becomes convinced that he’s now immortal and his financial investments start to really pay off, Alice gets Maddie and Jonathan involved to find out what’s really going on.

Does selling your soul to Lucifer really make you invincible? (Spoiler alert: it does not).

In addition to a summary and analysis of the episode, this podcast includes details about locations used and sheds some light on extraordinary real-world connections to people, places and other stuff.

And as if that wasn’t enough, long-dead poet William Topaz McGonagall resurrects himself from beyond the grave to commit his thoughts on the episode to paper.

The Curious Tale of Mr Spearfish was the opening episode of series three of Jonathan Creek and aired on November 27th 1999.

Written by David Renwick and directed by Keith Washington, guest stars include Andrew Tiernan, Rachel Power, Griff Rhys Jones, Adjoa Andoh and Brett Fancy.
