8. The Scented Room

Snobby theatre critic Sylvester Le Fley’s cherished El Greco painting is stolen from under the noses of several onlookers.

Jonathan takes great delight in figuring out the solution but not telling the supercilious drama reviewer how it was all done. The rotter.

Did someone spirit it through the glass ceiling? Or a crack in the floor? And why hasn’t the 97-year-old security guard retired yet?

We analyse the story, dig up some location information and track down some mindboggling real-world connections to details in the show.

Once again, long-dead William Topaz McGonagall (often described as the worst poet to have ever walked the earth) resurrects himself from the grave to watch the episode and pen some lines about it.

The Scented Room was the third episode of the second series of Jonathan Creek, airing on 7th February 1998.

Written by David Renwick and directed by Sandy Johnson, guest stars included Valerie Colgan, Christine Kavanagh, Peter Copley and, of course, Bob Monkhouse.
